Jordan is an incredible country, but there are a few things worth knowing before you go. From driving and budgeting to Petra, Wadi Rum and the Jordan Pass, these practical tips will help you plan your trip and avoid a few common mistakes.
1. Buy the Jordan Pass before you arrive
The Jordan Pass is one of the best-value purchases you can make before visiting Jordan. It includes your visa fee (if you stay at least three nights) and entry to more than 40 attractions, including Petra, Wadi Rum and Jerash. We saved both money and time by buying it online before our trip.
2. Rent a car – it's the best way to explore Jordan
One of the best decisions we made was renting a car. Jordan is surprisingly easy to drive in, and having your own transport gives you the freedom to stop at viewpoints, explore small villages and drive scenic routes like the King's Highway at your own pace.
3. Don't skip the King's Highway
Most navigation apps will send you via the Desert Highway because it's faster, but you'll miss one of the most scenic drives in the country. The King's Highway is packed with canyons, castles, viewpoints and historic sites, making the journey just as memorable as the destinations themselves.
4. Spend at least two days in Petra
Petra deserves more than a quick day trip. We spent two full days exploring the ancient city and still felt like there was more to discover. If possible, enter through the Backdoor Trail on one day and the Main Entrance on the other for two completely different experiences.
5. Jordan's Weather Might Surprise You
Before travelling, we imagined Jordan would be warm everywhere. In reality, temperatures vary dramatically depending on where you are. The desert can be freezing after sunset, while the Dead Sea feels almost tropical. Layering is essential.
6. Stay at least two nights in Wadi Rum
Many travellers only spend one night in Wadi Rum, but we highly recommend staying two. It allows you to enjoy a full jeep tour, experience the sunset and sunrise, spend an evening under the stars and slow down enough to appreciate the desert.
7. Always Carry Some Cash
Although credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger restaurants, we regularly needed cash for smaller shops, local cafés, entrance fees, tips and some activities. ATMs are easy to find in larger towns, but it's worth carrying some Jordanian Dinars with you.
8. Jordan Is One of the Safest Countries in the Middle East
Safety was one of our biggest concerns before visiting Jordan, but we quickly realised we had nothing to worry about. Throughout our trip, we felt incredibly safe. Jordan even has a dedicated Tourist Police to assist visitors whenever needed.
9. Don’t Drink the Tap Water
Tap water in Jordan is generally not recommended for travellers. We always carried bottled water with us, especially during long drives, hikes and days in Petra or Wadi Rum. It is also worth checking that the bottle seal is intact before drinking.
10. Download an eSIM Before You Arrive
Having mobile data made navigating, checking opening times and staying connected much easier. Downloading an eSIM before departure means you can get online as soon as you land, without having to search for a local SIM card at the airport.
